Video clips: The "LIVE! White House Garden Challenge" and Mrs. Obama Double-Dutch jump roping...
First Lady Michelle Obama appeared on ABC talk show LIVE! with Kelly on Monday morning, discussing her new book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America with host Kelly Ripa and guest co-host Bryant Gumbel. Mrs. Obama traveled to New York to tape the show on May 30th, as part of a TV book tour for the publication of the book. (Above: Mrs. Obama with hosts Ripa and Gumbel, holding a copy of the book)
Clad in a colorful top, a green cardigan, and bright blue trousers, Mrs. Obama discussed American Grown before she and the hosts were joined by "Iron Chef" Mark Forgione, who owns American Cut, a steakhouse in Atlanta. He took the "LIVE's White House Garden Challenge," and cooked Crostini with Lavender and Chive Blossoms, and a salad "made with vegetables straight from the White House garden," according to Ripa.
Mrs. Obama gave the chef's salad a "wow" after she sampled it.
"The point is, that's what vegetables should be," Mrs. Obama said. "And if kids grow up tasting that...they'll devour it."
Mrs. Obama also joined the Cary Family YMCA SuperSkippers of North Carolina for a round of Double-Dutch jump roping, and surprised the kids--boys and girls--with her prowess. Watch:
Mrs. Obama helped coach Ripa through the whizzing ropes; Ripa said she was “dying to learn” the sport.
“Turning is just as important as jumping,” Mrs. Obama said.
After Ripa successfully jumped rope on her second try, the First Lady was ready to show her what a real expert can do, but as she jumped into the ropes, she missed.
The First Lady instructed the SuperSkippers to “turn faster” before she jumped in to show off her skills.
“That was amazing! Did I look as dignified?” joked Ripa.
“I need a nap!” exclaimed Mrs. Obama.
It was Mrs. Obama's third visit to the show, which is owned by Disney-ABC, which recently pledged to revamp its junkfood advertising to support the Let's Move! campaign. Ripa has also visited Mrs. Obama to film her show at the White House, including for a cooking demonstration at the 2011 Easter Egg Roll.
The First Lady's outing comes on the heels of an appearance last week on Food Network's Restaurant: Impossible, as well as a star turn on The Biggest Loser, the Rachael Ray Show, Late Night with David Letterman, the Daily Show with Jon Stewart...etc. etc. etc. Click here for all posts about Mrs. Obama's TV appearances.
