As Malia Obama marked her 14th birthday on Wednesday, First Lady Michelle Obama sent her a 'Happy Birthday' greeting on Twitter, signing the missive on the account run by Obama campaign staff with her initials to indicate it was a personal message. The Tweet, which included a Fourth of July greeting to followers, was posted at 12:03 PM.

President Obama did not send Malia a Twitter greeting, instead sticking with a holiday greeting, writing "Here's to the country we love. Happy fourth. -bo," on the @BarackObama account. Staffers later retweeted Mrs. Obama's birthday wish on the President's account. The Twitter greeting is a first; daughter Sasha, who turned 11 on June 10, did not get a Twitter birthday shout-out from either her mother or father.

Obama for America has run birthday card/donation campaigns for the President and Mrs. Obama, but the girls have been excluded from the fundraising efforts, though they do appear in campaign materials.

The Tweets were sent as the First Family geared up to welcome more than 1,200 troops and their families to the White House for an Independence Day picnic and concert from Brad Paisley. The White House did not give details about any birthday celebration for Malia, since the girls' activities are considered "off the record"...unless it is for the campaign.

The First Family returned from Camp David on Wednesday morning, after an extended stay over the weekend.
